Reverend Joseph A. Novak, S.J. -- In Remembrance:

We are sad to announce the death of Fr. Joseph A. Novak S.J., who passed away on Sunday, January 10th. Fr. Novak was a Sunday Associate for the past twenty years at Annunciation. Fr. Novak also lived here at the Annunciation Rectory for a year while on sabbatical. He will be missed by all of us. Fr. Novak served as the Provincial of the New York Province, Rector of Fordham University and St. Peter’s College in New Jersey, and Professor Emeritus of Religious Education at Fordham University. He was most recently the Chaplain for Alumni at Fordham University. We are deeply grateful for Fr. Novak’s kind and priestly service to Annunciation over the years and extend our condolences to his family and to the Society of Jesus. Fr. Novak’s Funeral was celebrated at the Fordham University Church this past Thursday. Condolences may be sent to Fr. Novak’s brother, Fr. Vincent Novak S.J., Fordham University, Loyola Hall, Bronx, New York 10458. We will celebrate a Memorial Mass for Fr. Novak here at Annunciation on Wednesday, February 10th at
7:00 p.m.

Catholic Schools: Dividends for Life:

Annunciation School celebrates excellence in Catholic education next week with special events planned for the students, parents, and teachers. On Thursday, February 4th, we will host an Open House from 9-11 a.m. for prospective students and their parents. All parishioners are invited to clip and collect Box Tops from participating General Mills products (e.g., cereals, snacks, Yoplait yogurts). Just place your box tops in the container marked “Box Tops” at the back of the church. Each box top is worth 10 cents, and with your help our school can earn up to $10,000.

Midnight Run:

On February 14th, Midnight Run will be going on a Breakfast Run. We are looking for donations of men’s new white Socks, Hats, Gloves, Sweatshirts or Fleeces (if possible size Medium and larger). We are also looking for donations of hard boiled eggs, soft fruits, juice boxes, muffins, donuts, and cereal bars. The collection is taking place in the Parish Room on Saturday, February 13th, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. On behalf of our homeless friends we thank you.

Annual Jansen Hospice Presentation:

Patrick Neville, our Parishioner and Chairman of the Hospice Speakers Committee, will have Hospice volunteers speak at all of our Masses on January 30th and 31st. Envelopes for this collection will be in the pews. The primary goal of these brief talks is to assure that our community is aware of all the services The Jansen Memorial and Palliative Care Program offers.

Annunciation Food Drive for Mercy Center:

The Annunciation parish will be collecting food for the Mercy Center in conjunction with their 20th Anniversary Celebration.. Mercy Center is a community center for women and their families located in the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx. Non-perishable food items including rice, pasta, tuna fish, canned goods, cereals, jelly, peanut butter, may be placed in the baskets located in the rear of church during the month of February. On July 7th, Pope Benedict XVI called for a new world financial order guided by ethics, dignity and the search for the common good in the third encyclical of his pontificate.

In ''Charity in Truth,'' Pope Benedict denounced the profit-at-all-cost mentality of the globalized economy and lamented that greed had brought about the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.
